I LOVE MATARO, MOURVEDRE, MONASTRELL - WHATEVER YOU WANT TO CALL IT, I THINK IT IS GREAT. MOST PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT IT, IF THEY DO THEY DON’T GET IT. IT CAN BE TANNIC, IT CAN BE FUNKY, AND IT CAN SMELL LIKE LEATHER AND MEAT. MOST PEOPLE JUST SAY ISN’T IT THE ‘M’ IN ‘GSM’, THATS AS MUCH AS I’M WILLING TO TRY - WELL THEY ARE MISSING OUT!

MATARO IN WARM CLIMATES CAN PRODUCE PRETTY EPIC WINES - BIG ON COLOUR AND TANNIN AND NOT SO MUCH ON THE PLUSHNESS PEOPLE ARE USED TO WITH SHIRAZ THAT IS MADE IN A SIMILAR ILK. ON LIMESTONE AT HIGH ALTITUDE IT TURNS THE VOLUME DOWN A BIT.

SO WHEN I WAS HANGING AROUND IN MY FRIENDS VINEYARD IN THE SIERRA NEVADA IN THE USA AND HE HAD A FEW SPARE BINS OF MATARO I JUMPED AT THE CHANCE. THEN HE TOLD ME I’D HAVE TO PICK IT. THIS VINEYARD IS SO STEEP YOU CAN SURF ON THE PICKING CRATE DOWN THE BOTTOM. I HATE PICKING ON FLAT GROUND LET ALONE THIS. AT THE END OF THE DAY IT WAS WORTH IT.
